connecticut on the floor here, and i know they are coming to speak about the horrible tramgd in newtown last friday. i will abbreviate my remarks so they can have the floor and commend both of them for extraordinary statements last night at a memorial service. i will not forget ever some of the things they shared with us about this terrible tragedy. but i come to the floor this morning just for a few moments to pay tribute to one of my great friends and one of my great colleagues, danny inouye, who passed away yesterday. the majority leader has done such an extraordinary job recounting his life, and i think back what it must have meant to him as he witnessed pearl harbor at the age of 20. he said that he realized at the time that the pilots in those planes that were bombing his family and others in hawaii were people of the same ancestry as his father, and it hurt him. it hurt him as well to be branded as suspect because of his japanese origin and to see literally tens of thousands of japanese americans interned in camps because their loyalty was questioned. he took the opportunity to volunt

is here. and, of course, so much of our attention still on newtown this morning. more funerals are planned for today. as we look at those makeshift memorials. >> it's unclear when the elementary school survivors will be able to go back to the classroom. this school in a nearby town is being readied for them by volunteers. and teachers have already been meeting to find a way to start that normal routine back for them again. it's so important. >> it is. we're going to go to amy robach there in just a moment. >>> first, breaking news overnight. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, held captive in syria since thursday has been freed after a firefight. martha raddatz has details from washington. what a dramatic escape. >> reporter: it certainly is. richard is a very experienced foreign correspondent. and he had been inside syria before. he and his crew were grabbed after crossing into northwest syria last thursday. there had been no communication with them, no contact, no ransom demands. they were thrown in the back of a truck, bound and blindfolded, although not physically harmed.

, good afternoon, everyone. the entire congress is united and condemning the violence in newtown, and on the need to enforce our laws. as we continue to learn the facts, congress will examine whether there is an appropriate and constitutional response that would better protect our citizens. with regard to the year end tax issue, i would remind everyone that in the summer of 2010 senator schumer said, quote, first i don't know a single one of my colleagues who wouldn't prefer to do tax breaks for people up to $1 million. it's my understanding that that is essentially the proposal that the house of representatives is likely to send over to us later in the week. >> well, i think the other thing that's getting lost in the whole debate about the fiscal cliff is where are the savings, where are the spending cuts. the president has talked about a balanced plan, but as they've tried to negotiate with speaker boehner and the house leadership, it continues to focus on one issue and that is how much are we going to raise taxes on small businesses which is, as we said before, a terrible idea

, we are hearing more stories of courage and heroism. gene rosen lives near the school in newtown. friday morning, before anyone knew what had happened, he discovered six terrified children in a school bus driver on the front lawn. it rosen invited them into his home. he describes what happened next. >> when the kids stated that they could not go back because their teacher is dead and bay could not go back. i could not accept that. i just kept listening to them and when they talk more one of them stated that it was a big gun and a small gun. they stated that there was blood, and there was blood. i prayed. >> the teacher was 27 year- old vicotoria soto. she reportedly shielded her students in the corner of the room to get away from the gunfire. the kids and somehow got away and were able to get to rosen's home. rosen gave them some jews and some of his grandson's toys to comfort them, then he called their parents. >> we have clear skies outside and it is along the temperatures to drop. it is a cooler start today and even colder tomorrow. weaken see fault developing. we are not gett

[ male announcer ] being together is the best part of the holidays and cheerios is happy to be part of the family. you just ate dallas! . >>> firefighters made work of a fire this morning at department building. flames broke out at 7:30 this morning. everybody got out okay. firefighters had the fire out in 15 minutes. >>> san francisco firefighters carried out a strange rescue this morning. it involved a man and a chimney and no, he wasn't dressed as santa claus. >> i am not sure how he entered. >> the man slid down 6 floors inside the chimney from the roof of an apartment building and he got stuck near the bottom. neighbors called 911. firefighters had to dismantle part of the chimney and then use special equipment to get him out. >> w
